Google Strikes Back at Bing With Coffee… I Mean Caffeine
So having posted about Microsoft’s new contender Bing, a recent development has reared it’s head in the search engine market. Google Caffiene.
Now when I first heard about this new project, some of the many parallel processes running in my head surmised that Google must have entered yet another market. After all, they are dominating the:
- Search market
- Pay per click market
- Online video ‘market’
- Webmail market
- Maps market
Need I go on? Well, okay, I will. They are in the:
- Blogging market
- Communications market
- Cloud computing market
They have recently entered the:
- Mobile OS market
- Browser market
- OS market
So naturally, I presumed that they had put 2 and 2 together, made 6 and decided that they would personally fulfill the insane caffiene needs of the Googleplex, then Silicon Valley, then the world! By offering a product superior to Starbucks, devised using some of the worlds greatest minds in science.
Unfortunately, my fantasy could not be further from the truth. Though I’d be interested to see if you would buy Google Coffee, (leave a comment Mr Cutts or Melissa, I think this idea is a winner), Google Caffiene is the revised version of their search algorithm.
Designed to enrich the user experience through delivering a higher quality set of results. Google Caffiene is currently in beta and you can test it here. The SEO world is currently buzzing with rumours and webmasters are getting anxious about the potential implications of Caffiene. Make sure you remember to log out of all Google products before testing your search results as Google does personalise search results based on your search history.
I would recommend you research any discrepencies in ranking, but before you get too jumpy, bear in mind that this is still in testing and final results will likely change considerably.
If you find something you don’t like in the new version, you can report it using the button labelled ‘Dissatisfied? Help us improve’ at the bottom of your results.
One of the rumours flying around is that poor quality links will be even less valuable in the new update.
3 factors I suspect will be enhanced with caffeine:
- There is a move towards Universal Search, meaning you can segment results into images, videos, products and more.
- The growth of social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook will likely become more prominent.
- Community and content SEO will provide even more of a boost than before due the devaluation of many types of link.
